OVERVIEW

All universities and courses are approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia. Courses approved by a country’s Ministry of Higher Education stand approved by any other country’s Ministry of Higher Education world-wide.

The government welcomes foreign universities to establish branch campuses in Malaysia. Many American,British and Australian Universities have set up their campuses in Malaysia for Malaysian as well as international students who wish to study in Malaysia at a lower cost.

The governing authority of higher educational institutions is the Ministry of Higher Education. Institutions are classified as Government-funded, public universities, polytechnics and colleges.

COST OF STUDYING IN MALAYSIA
The cost of education in the Malaysia varies from one state to another, the type of university chosen and the course of study.

TUITION FEES

Tuition fees are low when compared with US & UK universities. 
Undergraduate Bachelor Degree – US $11,000 to US $18,000
Postgraduate Masters Degree – US $9,000 to US $18,000

COST OF LIVING
US $6000 per annum

ACCOMMODATION COST
The average monthly rental for a single room on a twin-sharing basis could be between US $100 and US $150, depending on the area, the type of accommodation and the facilities available.

Groceries and eating out – $40 to $80 per week
Phone and Internet – $5 to $15 per week
Public transport – $10 to $20 per week
Personal expenses – $ 10 to $ 20 per week
Entertainment – $20 to $50 per week

MEDICAL / HOSPITALIZATION INSURANCE

If you put aside US$12.50 per month for medical expenses, it would be sufficient (include you in case you need outpatient treatment at a private clinic) during the year. This estimate is the amount you will have to pay for your medical and hospitaliZation insurance of about US$125 per year.

PART TIME JOB

International students are allowed to work on a part-time basis during semester breaks, festive holidays or more than seven days of holiday for a maximum of 20 hours a week. They are permitted to work in restaurants, petrol kiosks, mini markets and hotels except in the following positions: cashier, singer, masseur, musician, Guest Relations Officer.

International students aspiring to work part-time must have a valid ‘Student Pass’. The application to work part-time must be forwarded by the representative of the University to the Immigration Department Headquarters Malaysia. The University must provide a supporting letter allowing the Non-Malaysian student to work, and which includes the dates of the semester breaks.Students will be interviewed, after which the application will be either approved/declined.

The passport of students whose application has been approved will be endorsed accordingly. The University is required to submit a quarterly report to the Immigration Department about the students’ academic progress. The extension of the approval to work will only be given if the student maintains a good academic record.

International students must comply with the new Student Pass policies set by the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). Please adhere strictly to the requirements to minimize delay or other problems that may arise.

STUDENT VISA

Necessary documentation to the Student EnrolLment Centre (SEC) before an application can be made for your Student Pass. The University will apply for a Student Pass on your behalf.

The whole process with COMPLETE DOCUMENTS for application, submission and approval for the Visa Approval Letter (VAL) from EMGS will take approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Once approved, the University will obtain the Visa Approval Letter (VAL) from EMGS, which will be issued by the Malaysian Department of Immigrations.

It is illegal to study in Malaysia under a Social / Tourist pass. The University strongly discourage the use of Social Visas to enter Malaysia before receiving your Visa Approval Letter (VAL). Please be reminded that as the University cannot guarantee the approval of your Student Visa/Pass application, it may place your studies at high risk.

Malaysia is a multi-ethnic melting pot. Just half the population is Malay while almost a quarter is Chinese and over seven per cent is Indian. Whilst Malay is the official language of Malaysia, English is a recognised language and widely spoken.

Such a setting is a great foundation for international students to make them feel at home in addition to having a sense of belonging. The global community allows for religious, cultural and social acceptance and is testimony to the fact that Malaysia is home to just 172000 international students.

Studying at university is not solely an academic experience and having the opportunity to appreciate the different facets, cultures and religions that make up the Malaysian identity is a learning curve in its own right.

There are just so much to choose from, from local food courts to restaurants with regional favourites.

It is a mandatory requirement from the Government of Malaysia to protect the health of Malaysian residents and to reduce the potential burden on the public health service in Malaysia. The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has laid down criteria for the assessment of the health condition of international students which must be complied with. The criteria does allow for students to appeal a failed result.

Medical screening is a health check that consists of a general examination by the examining doctor, blood and urine tests as well as a chest x-ray examination.

A medical examination is required for all international students before arrival into Malaysia with the exception of students who are enrolling into Public Universities.

In addition, a Post arrival medical examination is mandatory for international students and you are required to attend and complete the medical examination at EMGS’s approved panel of clinics/hospitals within 7 days from your date of entry into Malaysia. Students enrolling into Malaysia Public Universities can attend the medical screening at clinics located in their universities.

You are allowed to bring your dependants only if you are studying full time in Malaysia. Approval of your dependant pass application is at the discretion of the Immigration Department of Malaysia.

 

Please note that EMGS will process dependant passes for students enrolled in Public and Private Universities only. Postgraduate students from all countries are eligible to apply for a dependant pass. With regard to undergraduate students, students from 17 countries are eligible to apply for a dependant pass. Please find the complete list HERE.

Please notify your university if you intend to bring your dependants since the application will be made through your institution.

This requirement varies, depending on the course(s)/programmes(s) that you are interested in. Virtual Edu consultant can clarify the course/programme specific entry requirements.

Depending on your Institution type, you will have two options to do this:

i. Apply for your Visa online.

Students who have received offer letters from Public Universities and Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS) only will have the option to apply for their student Visa directly through the Education Malaysia website.

ii. Apply for your visa through your Institution.

The application can also be done through the institution. Once you submit the payment and all required documents to the institution, they will begin the process of applying for your Visa Approval Letter (VAL).

Student applying for language centres and skill centres will have to submit application via the institution.
